Can you believe August is almost over!  Cooler weather on the horizon, the back to school scurry and looking forward to new hairstyles for fall. Looking through all the new fall magazines for the perfect hairstyle and color, oh and some new makeup too.  There’s so many to choose from; what is best for me?  Do you like the trendy fashion, not too edgy but enough to get noticed look?  How do you choose the best look, there’s so many to choose from.  It’s sometimes challenging to find the right look but it is possible.  The never-ending hunt of looking like my favorite celebrity from a magazine or the red carpet, is quite a task! We are here to your rescue and have some quick tips that can help you get the look you want!

First, think positive, believe it or not attitude has a tremendous effect on one’s appearance and image.  Stand with confidence and actually think and feel you’re beautiful!   Start the process of what is the best look for you.  Comb through fashion magazines, explore different looks through pinterest, instagram and other media sites.  Compare face shapes, skin tone and facial features to help ensure that you’re choosing a hair color/cut/style that will work for you.  Then, capture your favorite looks and show them to your hairdresser.  Your hairdresser will confirm that the hair color/cut/style is best for your face shape, hair texture and then let them do their magic!

OK, what if you don’t have a hairdresser that you trust on giving you a new look.  The thought of finding a great hairdresser can be daunting. However, there’s some easy tips to help you find the right person for the job.  Check out your local salons, beauty academy and ask your friends. Typically finding a hairdresser in your area will come highly recommended by your friends or family.  This will give you peace of mind that you will be able to trust the hairdresser they recommend.  Once you decide on the perfect hairdresser, its time to schedule your consultation and show them the styles you like.  And most consultations are complimentary, so take the extra time and go in and visit with your new hairdresser before actually making the appointment. They are the expert and will help you decide which styles and colors are best for you.  Be prepared and ask lots of questions, this is your time and money.  Once you feel 100% you’re ready, go for it!

Lets talk about services at a cosmetology academy… have you ever been? Cosmetology academies offer services at reduced prices, a great way to indulge in salon services that you may not be able to afford.  It is safe; sometimes safer than the salon.  Why, you ask? Because future professionals (students) are supervised by licensed educators, so its like a bonus- two for one!  Your experience will be similar to the salon.  Schedule your appointment, come in and you’ll be greeted by a future professional, they will perform your consultation and then a licensed educator will come over and discuss the plan for your hair.  The educator is there to assist the future professional in making accurate decisions with your hair.  My family and friends come to the school and love it!  The only sacrifice you may make is time; yes, I know time is very important these days.  However, the future professional may take a little longer on your service.  With that said, it’s a great time to indulge in a manicure or pedicure at the same time you’re getting your hair serviced.  Feel like a princess or prince and it’s a win-win!

Follow my advice and you will be well on your way to finding your perfect hairdresser and a hair cut/color/style that you love!  Share your questions and even your experiences with us, we’d love to hear from you.  #newhairdresser  #lovemynewhair

Dog Days and Sunrays

It is officially summer, AKA shorts season. A swipe with a fresh razor blade topped with a dollop of lotion and your legs are ready! But wait, you don’t want to be the Snow White of all the bronzed beauties at that summer jamboree this weekend. Girl, your legs could stop traffic. A little color is a MUST. But how do you get it? Do you lounge at the pool for hours soaking up the sun’s rays? Do you hop in the tanning bed a few times a week to gradually build a glow? Or do you stand spread eagle while a machine mists you with a coat of cocoa? All of the options can be overwhelming but don’t panic, we are here to help!

First of all there are HUNDREDS (literally hundreds) of products including lotions, body butters, balms, oils, and mists (you get the idea) out there that promise to get you luminous, tanned limbs, but for the purposes of this blog post, let’s just compare two categories of tanning: UV tanning (both from the sun and a tanning bed) and spray tanning.

We know that when the skin is exposed to UV light, melanin cells are stimulated causing them to darken; when this happens you have a tan! UV exposure helps us manufacture Vitamin D, an important vitamin nutrient essential for many body functions, including healthy bones and a healthy immune system. Vitamin D also promotes muscle and heart health. And my personal belief is that tanning is also good for the soul (I mean who doesn’t love a day on the beach?!). The down side of UV tanning? We all knew it was coming: skin cancer. Yes, UV light creates free radicals which cause cell damage. Repetitive exposure to the sun causes skin damage, premature aging and wrinkles, and possibly melanoma, or skin cancer. As cancerous moles can be tricky to identify, regularly visiting a dermatologist is recommended.

On the flip side, spray tanning can get you looking very tan very quickly. In today’s fast paced world many people do not have the time or patience for anything other than urgency. If your party is tomorrow, maybe a fresh coat of spray tan would be a good option. With UV exposure, not everyone’s melanin cells react the same, but spray tanning works for all types of skin. If you have skin, you will get tan from a spray tan.  Not only will it give you a sun kissed glow, but it is also a healthy skin treatment. Norvell, a sunless spray used in many salons, is a skin firming formula that builds and restores the skin’s matrix, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

So far this sounds pretty good, right? The downside to spray tanning is that proper body care is required in order for your skin to receive and retain the tan. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! It is SO important that your skin be free of any dead skin cells, moisturizers, make up, or any other barriers.  Exercise is ill-advised the first day or two after getting a spray tan, as this can strip away some of your color. Because sweating profusely could smudge your tan, if you’re like me, it’s probably best to stay indoors and hibernate the first 24 hours, as stepping foot outside in this weather immediately results in an abundant free falling of perspiration.

In the world we live in, tan is trendy. (#trending) How you choose to get there, or whether you even choose to join the trend at all, is entirely up to you. A mist at a salon or a kiss by the sun, a dewy glow or a crispy bronze, this summer we are calling legs of all shades and sizes to rock those rompers.

Chocolate and Success

“Crave: verb. To have a very strong desire for something” (www.meriam-webster.com/dictionary). We all have cravings.(Ladies, it’s okay to admit to them.) A craving is a yearning for something (like chocolate!); it’s a hunger to achieve something or to become someone. A guru once said, “When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, only then you’ll be successful.” Success isn’t determined by a lucky roll of a die. Success isn’t delivered to our doorsteps tied with a pretty pink bow. Success is earned by those who work for it.

While we often rock pretty pink bows in our hair here at Crave Beauty Academy, we know that success does not come in such a glamorous package. We are hungry, not for food (although it’s nearly lunch time), but to achieve our dreams while bringing beauty to the world.

Crave is more than just a word to us. Crave is the way we go about our day. It’s the way we think and act. It’s the way we treat each other and our clients. We collectively crave knowledge and betterment of ourselves every day.

Today’s society endorses the curbing of all cravings. At Crave Beauty Academy we think differently. We encourage our students to crave achievement and dream big. We crave a sincere customer service culture that focuses on relationships and values. We crave an education that will set us above the competition.
